Clean WithinActs 10:15

The Basin at the Back of the Salon

This message is for the Saturday she sits at the salon basin with a stranger's hands in her hair, two showers already behind her, and knows the thing she confessed is not on her skin

The salon is loud on a Saturday, dryers and the radio and three conversations at once, and she is lying back at the basin at the back with her neck in the cold curve of it and a stranger's hands in her hair, and the water is exactly warm, and it is not reaching.

Adaeze is thirty eight. The girl doing the rinse is about twenty and is telling her about a wedding, and she is answering in the right places, and she is genuinely fond of this place and has been coming for six years.

Two showers already today. The first one was ordinary, at six, before work. The second one was at one o'clock in the afternoon, and there was no reason for it, and she stood in it for a while.

She has never told anybody about the second showers.

There is a thing from a few years ago. She confessed it, out loud, kneeling by her own bed, and she was not vague and she did not rush it. She has not gone back to it and she does not intend to. If you asked her whether God forgave her she would say yes immediately and she would mean it.

And it is not on her skin, and it is exactly where it was, and the water at the basin is warm and pleasant and stops at the surface the way water does.

The girl asks if the temperature is all right. She says it is lovely.

If that is your Saturday, wherever your version of it happens, this is written for you. And I want to take you up onto a roof at noon, because there is a scene up there where somebody gets corrected, and it is not the person you would expect and it is not for the reason you would expect either.

The Basin at the Back of the Salon

Who is being corrected

Here is the scene, quickly, because the shape of it is what matters.

Peter is on a roof, hungry, at about noon. He sees something let down like a great sheet, and in it are all kinds of creatures, and a voice says rise, kill and eat.

And Peter says no. Not casually. He says not so, Lord, and he says he has never in his life eaten anything common or unclean, which is true and which is a life of real obedience talking.

Then the voice comes back.

What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

Now look at who is being corrected.

It is not the sheet. Nothing in that vision needed to change. The correction is aimed at Peter, and specifically at what Peter is calling a thing that God has already dealt with, and the verb in it is call. It is about the naming.

And the text says it happened three times, which is a Hebrew way of saying: this is settled, this is not a suggestion, and there will be no further discussion.

You are the one being addressed in that correction, and the thing being corrected is what you have been calling yourself. Acts 10:15 aims at the naming rather than at the thing named, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written correction and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands at a salon basin.

I want to be careful here, because a woman who takes a second shower at one in the afternoon does not need somebody telling her she is doing something wrong. She has been telling herself that for years.

Notice what God does not say to Peter. He does not say your obedience was worthless. He does not say you should be ashamed of having been careful. Peter's whole life of not eating those things was real devotion and God does not take one word away from it.

He simply tells him that the category has been changed by somebody with the authority to change it, and that Peter's name for the thing is now out of date.

You have a name for yourself that went out of date when God changed the category. It is written as a correction of vocabulary rather than of character, and His Spirit is the one carrying a written correction into a life, which is why it holds with a stranger's hands in your hair.

What God hath cleansed

Now the first half of the sentence, and it is the part to hold on to.

What God hath cleansed.

That is a completed act in the past, performed by God, and it is stated as the reason for the correction. The reason Peter must stop using that word is not that God prefers positive language. It is that a thing has actually happened, and the word no longer describes reality.

So the cleansing is not the goal of the sentence. It is the premise. It has already occurred, before anybody said anything, and everything in that verse is built on top of it.

And a woman at a basin has been treating it as a goal. She has been working toward a state that the verse assumes as the starting point, which is why the water never reaches, because water cannot produce a thing that has already been produced.

You have been working toward a state that was the premise rather than the target. Scripture puts the cleansing in the completed past as the ground of the correction, and the same Spirit at work in that scene is the one testifying inside a person now.

Something has to go here in the middle, in plain sight and not tucked at the bottom. If the second showers have become more than second showers, if the washing has started taking hours or the nights have gone long, or if the thinking has traveled out past regret toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Talk to your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If today is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be with you in it. That is not a lesser road than prayer and it is not a fault in your faith. God has always worked through people, and one sitting across from you is part of what He is doing rather than an alternative to it.

Three times, and then the sheet went up

There is one more detail and it is the last thing that happens in the vision.

It was done three times, and then the vessel was received up again into heaven.

The sheet goes back up. The conversation ends. God does not stay on that roof arguing with Peter until Peter feels differently about it, and Peter is not recorded as having a change of feeling at any point in the passage. He is recorded as being confused, and then as getting up and going with the men who arrived at the gate.

He acts before he feels. The text is completely open about that.

That is permission for a woman who cannot find one atom of difference in herself at a basin on a Saturday. The correction was issued, it was issued three times, and then the matter closed, and nobody waited for a feeling to arrive before things moved on.

You are not required to produce a feeling before the matter is closed, and the man in that scene did not produce one either. Acts 10:15 closes the vision without anybody's internal weather changing, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.

And I am not going to tell you that the sense of it lifts today, or that there is no second shower this week. That is not mine to promise you and this site does not deal in it. What I will tell you is which of the two things is load bearing, and it is the completed act and never the water.

You are clean right now with the feeling exactly where it is, and the feeling has never once been a witness. It is written and it is finished, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a finished thing real in a body.

The breakthrough

Here is the hinge of it, and it is one word, and the word is call.

Stop calling it what you have been calling it. Not because feelings are wicked and not because you should be able to feel differently on demand. Because a name is a thing a person actually has some say over, and the feeling is not, and God went after the name.

You are clean, this Saturday, and God settled that before anybody said a word about it. Acts 10:15 makes the cleansing a completed act and the correction a matter of vocabulary, and it is His Spirit and not the volume of your agreement who makes that word real in a woman lying back at a basin.

And the second thing, which is the one that lets a person sit up and pay and go.

You have nothing to bring to it, and having nothing to bring is not a lack in you. The written correction rests on an act already performed by God and asks the person only to stop using a word that has gone out of date, and the Spirit who applies it is not waiting on your skin to report anything, so the sense of it can be in the room without naming you.

Declare this over yourself

Speak these because of where you stand, not because of what the water did or did not reach. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is what gives a person the right to speak over their own life. Scripture is the ground under all three lines and the Holy Spirit carries them out, so a tired voice carries them exactly as well as a loud one. And what God does with the feeling is His to decide, said under not my will, but Thine.

  1. Feeling that says I am still unclean, you are not the verdict. Acts 10:15 says what God has cleansed is not to be called common, and the cleansing was finished before anybody opened their mouth on that roof. In the name of Jesus you go back to being weather in my chest, and I am not naming myself after you.
  2. Habit of the second shower, you have no right to run in this house. His word aims the whole correction at the calling and never once at the thing that had already been cleansed, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying to that in me today.
  3. Lord, You cleansed, and Acts 10:15 puts that in the finished past and repeats it three times so nobody could mistake it. I am taking You at Your word at this basin, and I am going home clean.
