They balance. Every month, to the cent, and they have for thirty one years, and there are two firms in that town that will not use anybody else.
Ezra is fifty eight. He is not the fastest and he has never pretended to be. What he is, and what everybody who has ever worked with him knows, is that if he signs a set of accounts they are right, and that in three decades nothing has ever come back.
His own inner life does not reconcile at all.
That is his phrase for it. He came up with it about four years ago and he has thought it every few weeks since, always in exactly those words, because a man who works in figures reaches for the language he has.
Nothing dramatic. He would want that understood and so would I. There is no fraud here and no secret and no crisis. It is that there is an amount he has been carrying that he cannot find a category for, and a set of things he has done and not done that will not add up into any statement he could sign, and after four years of trying to make them balance he has quietly concluded that the problem is him.
He is a believer and he has been since he was nineteen and it is not decorative. He is on the finance committee, which is the obvious joke and everybody has made it.
He just knows his own books do not reconcile.
If that is your ledger, this is written for you. And I want to give you a proverb with two parties in it, because only one of them is allowed to sign.

Two parties, one signature
Here is the proverb.
All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.
Now, count the parties. There are two. The man, with his own eyes, and the Lord, with a weighing.
And notice what the sentence does with them. It does not say the man's assessment is malicious. It does not say he is lying. It says his own eyes are his own eyes, and then it names somebody else as the one who weighs.
That is not a moral accusation. That is a statement about standing.
And an accountant of all people knows what that means, because it is the load bearing principle of his entire trade. A set of accounts is not certified by the person who prepared them. It cannot be. The whole integrity of the profession rests on the certification coming from somewhere outside the preparer, and a man who signed off on his own work would not be a fraud exactly, he would be doing something that has no meaning.
So the proverb is not saying his self assessment is wicked. It is saying it has no standing. It is unsigned, and it always was, and it cannot be signed by him at any price.
You have never had the standing to certify your own accounts, and the verse takes you out of that chair. Proverbs 16:2 names two parties and gives the weighing to the second one, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written standing and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands at a desk.
And here is why that is a relief and not a demotion.
A man who has spent four years trying to reconcile his own inner accounts has been doing work that could not have succeeded, for the simple reason that the statement was never going to be valid however carefully he prepared it. He has not been failing at it. He has been performing an action that does not exist.
You have been attempting an action that has no standing rather than failing at one. It is written as a division of authority and not as a judgment, and His Spirit is the one carrying a written standing into a life, which is why it holds at a desk at eleven at night.
Weigheth is a calibration word
Now the verb, and it is not the one people assume.
The word here is not the ordinary balance word. It is a word about measuring out, about establishing a standard, about regulating. It is the word used elsewhere for God measuring out the waters and establishing the heavens, and its home sense is the setting of a measure rather than the operating of a scale.
That distinction matters more than it sounds.
A scale gives a reading. A standard is the thing a scale is checked against. Every scale in the world is only as good as the standard it was calibrated to, and no scale certifies itself, and any man in a trade with tolerances knows that the whole edifice rests on a reference somebody else keeps.
So the verse is not describing God running a scale over a man. It is describing God as the standard the scales are checked against.
And a man who has been marking himself down for four years has been reading his own instrument without ever having it calibrated, and there is no version of that where the number is reliable.
You have been reading an instrument that was never checked against the standard. Scripture uses the word for setting a measure rather than for operating a balance, and the same Spirit at work in that proverb is the one testifying inside a person now.
Something belongs here in the middle where nobody can skip it. If the not reconciling has been getting heavier, if four years has started to be a general account of yourself, if the nights have been getting long or the thinking has traveled out past regret toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Call your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If tonight is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be with you in it. That is not a lesser road than prayer and it is not a fault in anybody's faith. God has always worked through people.
Thirty one years is not a front
Now the thing I most want said, and I want it plain.
Thirty one years of accurate books is not a front.
Two firms in that town sleep at night because of him. That is not an exaggeration and it is not sentimental, it is a description of what a good accountant does for the people who rely on one, and he has done it every month for three decades and nothing has ever come back.
A man who does that has not been hiding behind competence. He has been being competent, which is a different thing, and it has been an actual service to actual people whose names he knows.
The fact that his own inner accounts do not reconcile is not an indictment of the outer ones. Those are two separate sets of books and one of them is genuinely in order and the other one is a set that no human being has ever been able to close, and I mean that literally: nobody in the history of the world has ever reconciled their own inner accounts, and the ones who think they have are simply not looking.
You have been genuinely competent rather than hiding, and the outer books were never a cover for the inner ones. Proverbs 16:2 removes the certifying without one word against the work, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.
And I am not going to tell you the inner set balances by spring, or ever. It will not. Not because you are deficient but because that is not a set of accounts anybody closes, and the closing was never assigned to you.
You are clean right now with the inner ledger exactly as open as it is, and the open ledger has never once been a witness against you. It is written and it is settled, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a settled thing real in a body.
Now the turn, and it turns on who is allowed to sign.
Four years of trying to reconcile has been four years of preparing a statement that could not be certified by the preparer. Not because the work was sloppy. Because that signature has never been valid, in any trade, anywhere, and the verse says so plainly by naming somebody else as the one who weighs.
You are weighed by the one holding the standard, tonight, rather than by your own instrument. Proverbs 16:2 gives the weighing to God and leaves a man's own eyes as what they are, and it is His Spirit and not the volume of your agreement who makes that word real in a man at his own desk.
And the second, which is the one that lets a man shut the lamp off.
You have nothing to certify, and having nothing to certify is not you leaving a set of books open. The written standing puts the measure in God's hands and takes the pen out of yours, and the Spirit who applies it is not waiting on a reconciliation, so the inner ledger can stay open without being unsigned business.
Declare this over yourself
You speak this out of where you stand, not because of what does or does not reconcile. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is what gives a man the right to speak over his own life. Scripture is the ground under all three lines and the Holy Spirit carries them out, so a tired voice carries them as well as a strong one. And what God does about the inner set is His to decide, said under not my will, but Thine.
- Books that balance to the cent, you are honest work and you are not a verdict. Proverbs 16:2 names two parties and gives the weighing to the second one, and my signature on my own accounts was never valid anywhere. In the name of Jesus you go back to being thirty one years of good service.
- Four years of trying to make myself reconcile, you have no right to sit at this desk. His word uses the word for setting a measure rather than for running a scale, and my instrument was never calibrated against anything, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying to that in me tonight.
- Lord, You weigh the spirits, and Proverbs 16:2 puts the standard in Your hands and takes the pen out of mine. I am taking You at Your word at this desk, and I am shutting the lamp off with nothing to certify.
