The Candle That Burned Down

It was a good candle. She had been saving it, which is a thing she does and knows she does, and she got it out on purpose because it seemed right to have something happening in the room.

Fiona lit it at about nine.

She sat in the chair by the window, which is the chair she sits in, and she said what she had come to say, and she had thought about the words a great deal because it had taken her most of a year to get to them. It was not a long prayer. It did not need to be. She had done all the thinking already.

And then she sat there with the candle going.

She is not sure how long she meant to sit. Certainly not until it went out. But she stayed, and the room got dark around the one light, and she watched the wax go down through the ridges on the side of the glass, and at some point after midnight it guttered and drowned itself and that was that.

Nothing happened.

She wants to be fair to herself here and I want to be fair to her too, so let me say it precisely. She was not expecting a vision. She is fifty four and she has been a Christian since she was nineteen and she is not a woman who goes looking for phenomena. She thought there might be a change in the room, or in her, or that at some point she would notice that something had lifted.

The candle burned for three hours and eleven minutes and she was the same at the end of it.

If you have sat with something burning down, this is written for you. And I want to give you a verse about your own heart that treats it more seriously than most people do, and then puts it firmly in its place.

The heart is a court

Here is the line.

For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

Now the first thing to notice is that John does not dismiss the heart. He does not say your feelings are unreliable and should be ignored. That is what a modern well meaning person says, and it is not what is written here.

He uses a legal word. Condemn. He treats the heart as a court that issues verdicts, which is a serious thing to call it, and he does not tell anybody the court is illegitimate.

He says there is a higher one.

That is a completely different move and it is much more useful, because a person cannot simply decide to stop feeling condemned. Being told your court does not exist while it is manifestly in session is no help at all. Being told it is subordinate to another court is help, because that is a thing you can actually do something with.

You are hearing from a court that is real and is not the last word, and Scripture grants it standing before it overrules it. 1 John 3:20 calls it condemning and then names something greater, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written ranking and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it landed in a chair at midnight.

And that changes what a person is doing when they sit and wait to feel differently. They are not waiting for a hallucination to pass. They are waiting for a lower court to reverse itself, which lower courts do not do, and which is not required of it in any case.

You have been waiting on a reversal that was never needed for the higher ruling to stand. It is written that God is greater than the heart, and His Spirit is the one carrying a written ranking into a life, which is why it holds in a room where nothing at all has changed.

He knows more, not less

Then the clause that does the actual work, and it is the one I want in your hands.

And knoweth all things.

Now, here is what most people quietly assume when they hear that God is greater than their heart. They assume it means He is kinder. That He is going easy. That His verdict is more generous because He is looking at less, or is choosing not to look closely, or is being merciful in the way a person is merciful when they decide not to press a point.

John says the opposite. The ground of God's greater verdict is that He knows all things.

Read that slowly. The reason His ruling outranks your heart's is not that He has less information. It is that He has more. Everything your heart is producing tonight, He already had, in full, before you lit the candle, and He had a great deal your heart does not have access to as well, and having all of it He rules the other way.

You are being ruled over by somebody who has more of the file than you do and rules the other way regardless. Scripture grounds the greater verdict in complete knowledge and not in leniency, and the same Spirit at work in that letter is the one testifying inside a person now.

Let me put something here in the middle, plainly and warmly. If the sitting up has stretched out, if the nights have been getting long, or if the thinking has traveled past the disappointment and out toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Talk to your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If tonight is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be with you in it. That is not a lesser road than prayer and it is not a fault in your faith. God has always worked through people, and one sitting with you is part of what He is doing rather than an alternative to it.

A verdict from a higher court

Now here is what I will not promise you and what I will.

I will not tell you the feeling arrives. I do not know. It may come next spring in the middle of something completely unrelated. It may not come, and there have been women of great faith who lived long lives without the internal confirmation they were told to expect, and they were not doing it wrong. Anybody who hands you a timetable has invented it.

What I will tell you is what a higher ruling does to a lower one, which is that it does not require the lower court to agree.

An appeal court does not send its judgment down for the first court's approval. It does not need it to change its mind. The lower verdict simply stops being operative, whether or not the judge who issued it ever revises a word of it. The lower court may go on muttering for years. It has no force.

You are living under a ruling that does not need the agreement of the court it overruled. 1 John 3:20 ranks the two and does not ask the lower one to concede, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.

And to anybody who has concluded from a long dark room that they must not really have received anything: nothing about the flatness is evidence. It does not mean the year of thinking was wasted or the prayer was thin or it should be done again more sincerely. There is nothing to redo.

You received it, and the absence of anything happening is not a defect in you or in what you received. The written ranking attaches no feeling to itself anywhere, and it is His Spirit and not your capacity to notice Him who makes a given thing genuinely given.
