The Receipt in the Shoebox

The box is an old shoebox and it lives at the top shelf of the closet, and inside it is not much: some photographs, two letters, a watch that does not go, and a receipt.

The receipt is for something that was settled eleven years ago.

Aaron does not need it. He has known he does not need it for a decade. The matter is closed, the other party is content, there is no dispute and there has never been a dispute, and there is a digital record in three places if anybody ever wanted one, which nobody will.

Three or four times a year, when he is looking for something else, he sees the box and takes it down and goes through it, and the receipt is on top because it always ends up on top, and he unfolds it and reads it, and folds it, and puts it back.

He is fifty five and he is a serious man and he has never told a soul about that piece of paper.

Now, there is a second thing that runs exactly the same way and he made the connection about two years ago.

He was forgiven for something. Properly. He was not casual about it and he did not rush it and he believes it happened.

And he goes back to God about it three or four times a year, when he is looking for something else, and he unfolds it, and reads it out, and folds it, and puts it back.

If you keep a receipt, in whatever form yours takes, this is written for you. And I want to hand you an argument the writer of Hebrews makes about repetition, because it turns the whole thing on its head and I have never got over it.

The repeating was the evidence

Here is the argument.

For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.

Now, that is written as a question and it is part of a longer argument, so let me put it plainly.

The writer is looking at the old sacrificial system, the one that ran year after year without a break, and he asks a devastatingly simple question about it. If it had actually finished the job, why did it keep happening?

His point is that the repetition was not incidental to the system. The repetition was the diagnosis. A thing that has to be done again every year is announcing, by the fact of its recurrence, that it did not close the matter the first time. You do not renew a settled thing.

And then he turns it around. The reason the new one is not repeated is not that people got more efficient. It is that it finished.

You are living under a thing that is not repeated because there is nothing left in it to repeat. Hebrews 10:2 makes the ceasing the proof of the finishing, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written argument and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands in front of a closet.

Now I want to be careful, because a man who goes back three or four times a year could hear that as an accusation, and it is not one.

Going back to God about a thing is not the sin. God is not tapping His foot. There is nothing wrong with a person who brings something up again, and Scripture is full of people bringing things up again, and He receives them every time without exception.

The point of the argument is not to shame the returning. It is to remove the obligation from it. What the writer is dismantling is the sense that it has to be done again for it to hold.

You have had a requirement lifted rather than a habit criticized, and the two are not the same thing at all. It is written as an argument about the system and not as a rebuke to the worshipper, and His Spirit is the one carrying a lifted requirement into a life, which is why it holds on an evening when the paper still gets unfolded.

Conscience of sins is a technical phrase

Then the second half of it, and the phrase there is precise.

Should have had no more conscience of sins.

That is not saying a purged person would feel wonderful. It is a narrower and more useful claim than that. Conscience of sins, in that argument, means the ongoing awareness of an outstanding matter. The sense that something is on the books. The thing that makes a man take a box down from a closet shelf.

The intended outcome of the new arrangement is not a feeling of wellbeing. It is the removal of a live file.

And that distinction is worth a great deal, because a person who has been told the gospel produces good feelings and then does not have good feelings concludes something terrible about themselves. Whereas a person who has been told the gospel closes a file can look at the file, see that it is closed, and let the weather in their chest be whatever the weather is.

You have a file closed rather than a mood undertaken, and the closing is the thing that was actually promised. Scripture aims at the ongoing awareness of an outstanding matter and does not promise anybody a temperature, and the same Spirit at work in that letter is the one testifying inside a person now.

Something belongs here in the middle where nobody can skip it. If the taking down of the box has grown into something heavier, if the nights have been getting long, or if the thinking has traveled past the flatness and out toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Call a doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If tonight is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be in it with you. That is not a lesser road than prayer and it is not a fault in anybody's faith. God has always worked through people.

Now the plainest thing in this article, and I want to leave it here at the end of the teaching.

The receipt is not the payment.

That is obvious when it is said out loud about a shoebox. Nobody thinks a slip of paper is money. Everybody understands that the paper is a record of a thing that happened elsewhere, and that if the paper were destroyed tomorrow the settlement would be exactly as settled as it is tonight.

The paper does not maintain the payment. It never did.

And a man who unfolds it three times a year is not maintaining anything either. He is looking at a record of something that is holding entirely without him.

You are looking at a record of something that is holding without any assistance from you. Hebrews 10:2 argues from the ceasing to the finishing, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.

I am not going to tell you the box stops coming down. I have no right to a schedule and I would not offer one. There are people who unfold things all their lives and are held perfectly by God the whole time.

You are clean right now with the paper still in your hand, and the paper has never once been what was holding it. It is written and it is finished, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a finished thing real in a body.
