The Bill He Paid Three Times

He found it on a Sunday afternoon, going back through six months of statements for something else entirely, and it took him a while to believe what he was looking at.

The same invoice. Three payments. Fourteen days apart, then eleven days after that. Same reference, same amount, three times.

Yusuf sat back in the chair.

He remembered all three. That was the part that got him. He remembered paying it the first time, on the day it came. He remembered two weeks later having the thought that he was not sure it had gone through, and going in and paying it again, and telling himself he would check. He remembered the third time, which was quicker, and about which he thought less.

He is not a careless man with money. He is careful to the point that his wife teases him about it. And here on a screen was proof that on three separate occasions he had decided the safest thing was to pay a thing that was already paid.

He got the money back. That took two phone calls and two weeks and the woman on the second call was very nice about it.

What he has not got back is the thing he saw in it, which arrived about an hour after the phone calls, sitting in the same chair, when he realized he does exactly this with God and has been doing it since he was twenty three.

If you have paid a thing more than once, this is written for you. And I want to hand you a single Greek word, because it is stronger than the English it usually gets translated into.

Once is stronger than one time

Here is the verse.

For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

The word behind once is not the ordinary word for a single occurrence. There is a perfectly good common word for that and this is not it.

This one carries a second freight. It means once in a way that settles the matter, once so as to exclude repetition, once decisively. Scholars usually render it once for all, and that is not a translator being poetic, it is the translator trying to get two ideas into English where the original had one word.

So the sentence is not merely reporting a number of occasions. It is making a claim about the character of the act. It happened in a manner that rules out its happening again, not because it would be inconvenient to repeat, but because repeating it would be meaningless. There is nothing left for a second one to do.

You are covered by an act that was performed in a manner that rules out repeating it. Romans 6:10 uses the word for decisively and unrepeatably rather than the ordinary word for one time, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written finality and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands in a chair on a Sunday.

Now, I want to be very careful here, because a man who has been going back to God since he was twenty three could take that as a criticism, and it is not one.

Nothing in this forbids you to pray about it. God is not exasperated with you and He has never once sighed when you started. You may bring Him anything, as many times as you want, for the rest of your life, and He will receive it every time with no impatience whatsoever.

What the verse removes is not permission. It removes obligation. The difference between may and must is the whole of this article.

You have had a requirement lifted rather than a habit rebuked, and the two have nothing to do with each other. It is written as a statement about the character of an act and not as a word against anybody who returns, and His Spirit is the one carrying a lifted requirement into a life, which is why it holds on an afternoon when you have just noticed how long it has been going on.

What a duplicate payment actually says

There is something worth sitting with about the three payments, and it is not about carelessness.

A duplicate payment is never a statement about the debt. It is always a statement about the payer's confidence in the record.

The invoice was not unclear. The bank did not lose anything. Nothing in the system failed. What happened is that a careful man could not get his trust to rest on a transaction he could not see, so he did the only thing available to him, which was to do it again, and doing it again produced a brief settling that then wore off, which is why there was a third one.

That is not a moral failing. That is what happens to a person who has no way to check.

And the whole point of the passage this verse sits in is that there is now a way to check. It is written down. The record is not hidden and it does not require a phone call. It says once, in a word that means decisively.

You have a written record to rest on rather than an internal settling that wears off. Scripture states the finality in the text where anybody can read it, and the same Spirit at work in that chapter is the one testifying to it inside a person now.

Let me put this here in the middle where it cannot be missed. If the going back has grown into something that governs your days, if the nights have been getting long, or if the thinking has traveled out past regret toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Call your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If today is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be in it with you. That is not a lesser road than prayer and it is not a fault in your faith. God has always worked through people.

He liveth unto God

And then the second half of the verse, which is where the passage actually wants to take a man, and it is not backwards.

But in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

The verse does not end at the once. It turns from the dying to the living, and it spends its last clause on what is going on now.

That is worth noticing if a great deal of your attention over twenty odd years has been directed backward at a transaction. The verse looks at the transaction, says once in the strongest word available, and then turns and faces forward, and Paul spends the rest of that chapter on what a living looks like.

He is not asking anybody to stop thinking about the past out of embarrassment. He is telling them there is nothing more to do there, and pointing at where the rest of it is.

You are being turned toward a living rather than kept at a settled account. Romans 6:10 spends its second clause on what is going on now, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.

I am not going to tell you the habit stops this week. It has been running since you were twenty three and habits that old take what they take, and none of that means anything failed. Anybody who hands you a timetable made it up.

You are clean right now, and today's version changed nothing about it in either direction. It is written and it is settled, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a settled thing real in a body.
