The Room She Keeps for Company

The front room is always ready. Not showroom ready, which would be strange, but ready in the sense that if somebody rang the doorbell right now she could open the door and let them in and there would be nothing to apologize for.

She does it in about four minutes most evenings and she does not resent it and she is good at it.

Her own bedroom she would not let anybody see.

Not because it is squalid. It is not, and Bethan would want that clear, and she is not describing a crisis. It is that there is a chair with things on it that have been on it since March, and a drawer that will not shut because of what is behind it, and a stack beside the bed of things she is going to deal with, and the whole room is the room of somebody who has been putting one particular thing off for a long time in a way that has spread.

She is thirty six. She noticed the parallel about a year ago and it has not left her since.

Because the front room is the front room, and the bedroom is the bedroom, and she is aware, in the way a person is aware of something they have never said out loud, that this is a fairly exact picture of how she has arranged her whole life.

She is not a fraud. I want to say that at the top and I will say it again. She is genuinely kind and she genuinely serves and every good thing anybody would say about her is true.

She just knows what is behind the door.

If that is your house, this is written for you. And I want to hand you a verse that gives an order and then, right at the end of it, lets everybody off in a way almost nobody notices.

Read the last word

Here is the sentence.

cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

Everybody hears the first half. Cleanse first that which is within. That is the famous part and it is usually delivered with some heat, and it is correct, and it is not the whole verse.

The last word is also.

That the outside of them may be clean also.

Sit with what that word is doing, because it is doing something enormously kind. Jesus is not saying the outside does not matter. He is not saying the outside is a lie and should be torn down. He says the outside will be clean as well, and He says it as the result, as what happens next, as the thing the first half produces.

The outside is not the enemy in that sentence. It is the beneficiary.

You are looking at an outside that Scripture includes rather than condemns. Matthew 23:26 ends with also and makes the outside the result rather than the accusation, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written order and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands in a front room.

That matters more than it sounds, because a woman who has heard that verse preached at her for years has almost certainly heard it as: your front room is a fraud. And she has quietly agreed, and gone on cleaning it, and felt worse about the four minutes every year.

The four minutes are not a fraud. Making a room welcoming for people you love is a good thing and it stays a good thing and Jesus never once says otherwise in that sentence.

You have been doing a good thing that got read to you as an accusation. It is written with the outside included in the result, and His Spirit is the one carrying a written inclusion into a life, which is why it holds standing in a hallway between two doors.

First is an order, not a verdict

Now the other word, and it is the first one.

Cleanse first.

First is a sequencing word. It tells you which thing comes before which. It does not tell you that the second thing is worthless, and it does not tell you the person doing it in the wrong order is a hypocrite. It tells you the order.

And an order is a piece of practical help. If somebody tells you to do the inside first, they are telling you where the work actually goes, and that is not a rebuke, it is directions.

I labor this because the guardrail on this site is not decorative. Nobody who reads a verse like that and recognizes themselves needs to be told they are a hypocrite. They already think so. They have been thinking so for a year, at the door of their own bedroom, with nobody to say it out loud to.

Adding to that is not ministry. It is just cruelty with a Bible in its hand.

You have been given directions rather than a verdict, and there is no charge anywhere in that sentence. Scripture supplies an order of work and no accusation against the person doing it, and the same Spirit at work in that passage is the one testifying inside a person now.

Something belongs here in the middle where nobody can skip it. If the room behind the door has gotten worse, if the putting off has spread into more than one thing, if the nights have been getting long or the thinking has traveled out past regret toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Talk to your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If today is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be with you in it. That is not a lesser road than prayer and it is not a fault in your faith. God has always worked through people, and one sitting in your front room is part of what He is doing rather than an alternative to it.

Who does the cleansing

There is one more thing and it took me an embarrassingly long time to see it.

The verse says cleanse. It does not say who.

And on this site that question is not a technicality, because everything else here says the same thing: the cleaning that reaches the inside has never once been done by the person who needs it. The whole rest of Scripture is unanimous about that and this verse does not contradict it.

So the instruction is not: go and scrub the inside the way you scrub the front room. That would be the front room method applied to a place the front room method cannot reach, and it would fail, and the failing would feel like one more thing about her.

It is: that is where the work goes, and the one who does that work is not you.

You have work that goes to the inside and hands that were never yours to do it with. Matthew 23:26 names the location without ever assigning the labor to the person, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.

And I am not going to tell you the bedroom gets sorted this month, or that the inside thing resolves on any schedule at all. That is not mine to promise you and I would rather be useful than encouraging.

You are clean right now with the door still shut, and the door has never once been a witness about you. It is written and it is settled, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a settled thing real in a body.
