Short Again by Friday

He keeps a running total. Not written down. Nobody has ever seen it and he would not know how to show it to anybody if they asked.

It runs anyway.

Something like: what a week ought to have in it, against what this week had in it. And by Friday evening, most Fridays, going back a long way, the second number is smaller than the first.

Noam is fifty two.

He is not a scrupulous man in the clinical sense and he wants that said and so do I. He does not check things four times and he sleeps fine and there is no crisis. He simply arrives at Friday evening with a figure in his head, and the figure is a shortfall, and he has arrived at that figure roughly two thousand times.

He could not tell you what the target is. That is the part that has begun to interest him lately, in a detached sort of way, because he is a man who likes a defined term and this one has never been defined by anybody, including him.

He has been a believer since he was twenty. He would say God has all of him. He goes on Saturday mornings and he means it.

And he is short again by Friday.

If you run a total like that, this is written for you. And I want to give you two words from Hebrews, because they say something about continuity that a weekly total cannot survive.

Ever liveth

Here is the verse.

Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

Ever liveth.

Now, most people read that as a statement about His being alive, which it is, and move on. But look at what it is grammatically attached to. He ever liveth to make intercession. The living and the interceding are joined in one clause, and the sense is that the interceding is what the living is for.

Which makes the interceding continuous, not periodic. Not a series of appearances on somebody's behalf at particular moments. An unbroken occupation, running for as long as He is alive, which is the whole point of the word ever.

That is a different picture from the one most people carry. Most people imagine intercession as something that happens when it is needed: a moment of crisis, a prayer going up, an intervention.

The verse describes something that does not stop, and therefore has no gaps in it, and therefore cannot be tallied by the week.

You are being interceded for continuously rather than at intervals. Hebrews 7:25 joins the living and the interceding in one clause, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written continuity and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands at a Friday table.

And that is what a running total cannot survive.

Because a total requires periods. It requires a start and an end and a measurement across the interval, and the entire arithmetic of a shortfall depends on there being units to count.

There are no units in a continuous thing. You cannot run a weekly total on something that has no weeks in it.

You have been totaling something that has no periods in it to total. It is written as an unbroken occupation, and His Spirit is the one carrying a written continuity into a life, which is why it holds at a table on a Friday evening.

To the uttermost

There is a phrase before it and it is doing something with completeness.

Able to save them to the uttermost.

The phrase behind that carries both senses at once: completely, and for all time. Translators have argued about which one it is and the honest answer is that it holds both, and either one is more than sufficient for a man with a figure in his head.

Completely means there is no remainder. There is no portion left outside the saving, no percentage held back, and therefore nothing to be short of.

For all time means there is no term. There is no point at which the arrangement lapses and has to be renewed, which means there is no year end, and a total without a year end is not a total.

You are saved to an uttermost that leaves no remainder and no term. Scripture uses the phrase that carries both completeness and duration, and the same Spirit at work in that letter is the one testifying inside a person now.

Something belongs here in the middle where nobody can skip it. If the Friday figure has been getting larger, if the total has started running on days other than Friday, if the nights have been getting long or the thinking has traveled out past regret toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Call your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. If today is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be with you in it. That is not a lesser road than prayer and it is not a fault in anybody's faith. God has always worked through people.

Nobody set the target

Now the thing this category is for, and I want it said plainly at a Friday table.

Nobody set that target.

The noticing came from inside, in a detached sort of way, and it is worth being much less detached about it, because it is the whole of the problem. A shortfall requires a figure to fall short of, and the figure has never once been nameable, and the reason it has never been nameable is that it does not exist and never did.

There is no passage anywhere in Scripture that specifies what a week ought to have in it. There is no weekly quota. There is no verse that says a believer should arrive at Friday with a particular quantity of anything, and if there were it would favor people with light weeks and good health, and nobody has ever wanted to write that down.

So the total has been running for two thousand weeks against a number that was never issued by anybody. That is not a failure. That is an accounting error, and it is the kind an honest man makes when nobody ever hands him the standard he assumed existed.

You have been measuring against a figure that was never issued. Hebrews 7:25 states a completeness with no remainder rather than a quota with a target, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.

And I am not going to tell you the total stops running. Two thousand weeks of a habit goes at the pace it goes.

You are clean right now with the figure still in your head, and the figure has never once been a witness. It is written and it is continuous, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a continuous thing real in a body.
