The Half She Always Leaves Out

She has given it maybe two hundred times. Women's meetings, the young adults, once at a conference in a hotel with a carpet she still remembers, and it works, and people come up afterward, and some of them cry.

It is true. Every word of it. Camille has never once said a thing in a testimony that did not happen.

It is also about sixty percent.

There is a stretch in the middle where she moves from one year to another year and the transition is smooth, and it has become so smooth over two hundred tellings that she does it now without a flicker, and there is a whole thing living in that gap, and nobody in any of those rooms has ever had the faintest idea.

Something was done to her in that gap. She was not the one who did it, and that is the whole of what I will say, and this article will never ask her, or you, for one word more.

She has decided, without ever putting it in words, that she is a fraud. Not because anything she says is false. Because of what she has left out. And she stands up and gives sixty percent and it helps people, genuinely, and she drives home carrying the other forty.

I want to say who I am writing to, plainly, because on this site that comes before everything.

I am not writing to somebody who did a thing and cannot get the sense of it off. That reader is real, there are articles here written carefully for them, and this is not one of them.

I am writing to the person carrying a shame that came out of what another person did.

And before we go anywhere at all: it was not yours. Nothing about you was a factor. Nothing in this article will circle back and ask you to check that, because there is nothing to check. And nothing here is going to ask you to tell the other forty percent to anybody, ever. Not to a room, not to a friend, not to a pastor. That is yours and it stays yours.

Day and night

Here is the line, and it comes out of the loudest chapter in the whole book.

for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

Start with the four words in the middle, because they are a description of an experience and they are extremely accurate.

Day and night.

Not occasionally. Not when a person is tired or low or has had a bad week. The text says it ran continuously, and anybody who has carried this knows that is exactly right. It does not keep office hours. It is there on a good Tuesday. It is there in the middle of a room where people are crying because God used you.

Now, I want to name something about that voice, because it is worth knowing exactly what has been talking. The word for accuser there is a legal one. It means the one who brings the case. Not the one who is right. The one whose job is to bring it.

A prosecutor's job is not to be correct. It is to accuse. And a voice that runs day and night without a break is not a voice that has assessed your situation carefully. It is a voice doing the only thing it does.

You are hearing a function rather than a finding, and Scripture names it as a job description before it names anything else. Revelation 12:10 calls it the accuser and describes the shift it worked, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written naming and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how convincing the voice sounds on a drive home.

And nothing in this waits behind you forgiving anybody, on any timetable, as any kind of condition. That is between you and God at whatever pace is yours and it stands in front of not one word of this.

You have a standing with nothing whatsoever in front of it, and no unfinished business of yours is holding it up. It is written with no condition attached, and His Spirit is the one carrying an unconditional thing into a life, which is why the state does not move with anybody's progress.

Where the accusing was happening

Now the phrase that changed this passage for me completely, and it is three words.

Before our God.

Read it again. The accuser accused them before our God. Not to them. Before God. The accusing was going on in a courtroom, addressed to the Judge, as a case being pressed.

That means the voice a person hears was never the proceedings themselves. What a person hears is the noise of a case being argued somewhere else about them.

And here is what the verse actually announces: that court has been cleared. The one bringing the case has been thrown out of it. Not overruled on this occasion. Removed from the room, and the announcement is made as a done thing.

So a voice that still runs day and night is a voice arguing a case in a court it has been ejected from, to a judge who is no longer hearing it, about a matter that was closed.

You are being accused in a room that has already been cleared, and the one doing it has no standing left in it at all. Scripture says cast down and puts it in the completed sense, and the same Spirit who inspired that chapter is the one testifying to a cleared court inside a person now.

Let me put this here, in the middle, in plain sight, and say it as warmly as I know how. Getting a person alongside you is part of what God is doing and never a lesser version of it. Talk to your doctor. Sit down with a counselor who knows this ground. You do not have to say anything about the forty percent to make that appointment, and a good one will never require it. And if the nights have gotten long, if the thinking has traveled past the ache and out toward wishing to be gone, call or text 988 or your local crisis line tonight and let a human being be with you in it. That is not a failure of faith of any kind. God has always worked through people.

A partial testimony is a true one

And now I want to say the thing I would want said to me, and I want to be careful with it.

A partial testimony is not a false testimony.

Every testimony ever given is partial. Nobody has ever stood at a microphone and given the whole of anything. Every account a person gives selects, and compresses, and moves from one year to another, and that is not deception, that is speech. Nobody in that hotel with the carpet was defrauded.

And a person is under no obligation, before God or anybody, to disclose what happened to them in order for what they say to be true. There is no verse anywhere that makes the completeness of your account the condition of your integrity. The obligation to tell what was done to you does not exist. It has never existed. Somebody invented it and it got into the water.

You are not a fraud, and the sixty percent you gave was entirely true when you gave it. The word never once makes a full account the condition of an honest one, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a person.

And I am not going to tell you the gap gets smaller or that a day comes when you say the whole thing. I have no right to hand you that and I would not want to. The forty percent is yours. It can stay yours forever and nothing at all is lost.

You are clean right now with the gap exactly where it is, and the gap has never once given evidence about you. It is written and it is settled, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a settled thing real in a body.
