There was a stretch of about three years when she thought somebody might.
Not anybody in particular. Just, in the general way a person hopes, she thought that at some point somebody who knew her would notice something and would say the thing people say, which is: are you all right, and then would wait through the first answer to get to the second one.
Delphine is sixty two. That stretch was a long time ago now.
Nobody did. Not out of coldness. The people around her were decent and busy and they had their own weather, and she is very good at being fine, and the being fine started as a project and became a skill and is now simply what she is like.
At some point in the fourth year she stopped expecting it. She could not tell you the day. It was more that the hoping quietly closed, the way a shop closes, and after that the thing sat where it sat and she carried it and got on, and she has carried it and got on for a very long time and she is genuinely good at it.
Something was done to her. That is all I am going to say about it, and this article will not ask her, or you, for one word more.
I want to say plainly who this is written for, because on this site that comes first.
This is not written for somebody who did a thing and cannot get the sense of it off. That reader is real and there are articles here written carefully for them, and this is not one.
This is for the person carrying a shame that came out of what another person did.
And before we go anywhere: it was not yours. Nothing about you was a factor, and nothing here is going to circle back and ask you to check that, because there is nothing to check.

Somebody has been counting
Here is the verse. It is one line and it has three verbs in it, and each one is a different kind of record.
Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?
Tellest. That is an old word and it means counted, the way a bank teller counts. David is saying God has been keeping a running tally of every place he has been driven and every stretch he has walked without a home to go to.
Put thou my tears into thy bottle. That is a container. Collected, kept, held on to.
Are they not in thy book. That is a written record, ledgered and permanent.
Three separate systems, and every one of them is God's, and every one of them is running on a thing nobody else in David's life seems to be tracking at all.
Now sit with what that does to a person who spent three years hoping to be asked.
The absence of the question was real. Nobody is going to pretend the people around you were paying attention when they were not. But the conclusion drawn from the absence, which is that the thing went unrecorded, is the part that is not true, and it is the part that has been carried.
You are inside a record that was being kept while nobody was asking, and the keeping never once depended on anyone noticing. Psalm 56:8 has three verbs of accounting in a single line, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written accounting and makes it real in a person, so it does not rest on how much of it can be felt in an empty hall.
And nothing in this waits behind you forgiving anybody. Not on a timetable, not as a precondition, not at all. Whatever is between you and the person who acted is yours and God's at your own pace, and it stands in front of none of this.
You have a standing with no unfinished business in front of it, and nothing you have not yet managed is holding it up. It is written with no condition attached, and His Spirit is the one carrying an unconditional thing into a life, which is why the state does not move with anybody's progress.
The bottle and the book
I want to stay on the bottle for a minute, because it is the strangest of the three and the tenderest.
A book makes sense. Of course God keeps a record. Everybody has a rough sense that things are written down somewhere.
But a bottle is not a record. A bottle is what you use when the thing itself matters and you do not want to lose any of it. You write down a number. You keep the thing.
Which means the tears are not being tallied as data. They are being kept as tears. Somebody has decided that the actual substance of it is worth holding rather than merely noting, and there is no purpose to that beyond the fact that they came out of a person He is not willing to lose track of.
That is worth an enormous amount to somebody who concluded, reasonably, that nobody was going to ask. Because the thing that was really lost when nobody asked was not information. It was the sense that any of it counted. And the bottle says it counted enough to keep.
You have tears held in a container by somebody who never needed to be told about them. Scripture puts the bottle beside the book on purpose, and the same Spirit at work in that psalm is the one testifying to a keeping inside a person now.
Let me put something here in the middle, in plain sight, and say it as warmly as I can. Getting a person alongside you is part of what God is doing rather than a smaller version of it. Talk to your doctor. Sit down with a counselor who knows this ground. You do not have to describe anything at all to make that appointment, and a good one will never require it. And if the nights have gone long, if the thinking has traveled past the ache and out toward wishing to be gone, call or text 988 or your local crisis line tonight and let a human being be with you in it. That is not a failure of faith of any kind. God has always worked through people.
Being known is not the same as being asked
Now here is the distinction I would most want handed to me, and it is a fine one.
Being asked and being known are two different goods.
Being asked is a good and its absence was a real loss and I am not going to talk you out of that. It should have happened. Somebody should have waited through the first answer. That is a genuine failure by people who could have done otherwise, and Scripture never asks anybody to pretend a failure was not one.
Being known is a different good and it did not depend on any of them. It has been running the entire time, in three systems, in the hands of somebody who did not require a report in order to have the information.
So the years without the question were not years of nothing. They were years of being counted, collected and written down by somebody who was not waiting to be told.
You were known through the whole of it, and the knowing never went through anybody else's attention to reach you. Psalm 56:8 keeps all three verbs in God's own hands, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a person.
And I am not going to tell you somebody asks you this year. I have no right to hand you that, and I will not hand you a hope with a date on it that could go the way the last one went.
You are clean right now with the question still unasked, and the silence has never once given evidence about you. It is written and it is settled, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a settled thing real in a body.
This is the turn, and it turns on what the silence meant.
The silence was real and the loss in it was real and this article is not softening either. What is not real is what the silence was taken to prove, and that is the whole of what has been heavy.
You are clean, tonight, and in respect of that thing you were never anything else. Psalm 56:8 keeps three records in God's own hands and none of them opened on anybody's request, and it is His Spirit and not the volume of your agreement who makes that word real in a woman stacking chairs in an empty hall.
And the second, and this is the one I would want said over me.
You have nothing to confess about it, and having nothing to confess is not you being let off something. The written verse counts and collects and ledgers and never once turns to ask the one who was carrying it for a statement, and the Spirit who applies it is not waiting on an account, so the closed hoping can be behind you without being against you.
You do not have to be ready. There is nothing here you need to be ready for.
Declare this over yourself
Say this because of where you stand, not because of anything that was done to you. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that alone gives a person the right to speak over their own life. Scripture is the ground under all three lines and the Holy Spirit carries them out, so a tired voice carries them as well as a strong one. And what God does with the silence is His to decide, said under not my will, but Thine.
- Question nobody asked me, you are a silence and you are not a verdict. Psalm 56:8 says God counted and collected and wrote it down, and not one of those three needed anybody to notice first. In the name of Jesus you stop standing for the thing you never proved.
- Conclusion that none of it counted, you have no right to stay in this hall. His word puts a bottle beside a book, and a bottle is for keeping and not for noting, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying in me that it counted enough to be kept.
- Lord, You put my tears in a bottle, and Psalm 56:8 has You keeping the substance and not just the number. I am taking You at Your word in this empty room tonight, and I am going home known.
