Nothing HiddenPsalm 139:7

The Passage She Never Reaches

This message is for the woman who reads Scripture aloud to a group every week and arranges, every week, not to reach one particular passage, who needs to open one shut place to God alone, safely

She reads aloud to the group on Wednesdays and she is good at it, which is why they ask her.

Not performed. She does not do voices and she does not lean on the words. She reads the way somebody reads who has already understood the sentence before they open their mouth, and the room gets quiet in a way it does not get quiet for everybody, and afterward people always thank her.

There is a chapter they will reach in about five weeks at the current pace.

Naomi has been managing that since March.

Nothing dramatic. She suggests they slow down and spend two weeks on something, which is a good suggestion and is always accepted because she is thoughtful and everybody trusts her judgment. Once she proposed a short series on something else entirely and it was one of the better things they did all year. Once she simply was not there, and it was genuine, and she has never been quite sure whether it was entirely genuine.

She is thirty eight. If you asked her whether she was avoiding a passage she would tell you honestly that she was, and then she would change the subject, and she is very good at changing the subject.

There is a reason. It sits in her own life and she has never described it to anybody and she does not intend to.

If you have arranged your route around a particular door, this is written for you. And I want to say the first thing before anything else: nothing here will ask you to describe what is behind it. Not to a person, not to a group, not to me. This is between you and God and it stays that way.

The Passage She Never Reaches

The tone of the question

Here is the line.

Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

Now, almost everybody I have ever heard read that has read it in the wrong key.

It gets read as dread. As a man in a corner realizing there is no exit. And you can see why, because in isolation those words could go either way, and a certain kind of teaching has been keen on the cornered version for a long time.

Read the psalm around it and the key is unmistakable. The verses immediately before it are about being known and being surrounded and having a hand laid on him, and he says of that: such knowledge is too wonderful for me. And the verses after it are a rhapsody. If I take the wings of the morning. If I make my bed in the depths. Every single image he reaches for is expansive and he is plainly enjoying himself.

It is not a man in a corner. It is a man who has discovered that there is no room in the universe where he is alone, and he is delighted about it.

You are inside a question asked in wonder rather than in dread, and the whole psalm around it settles which. Psalm 139:7 sits in the middle of a passage that calls the knowing too wonderful, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written tone and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands in a hall on a Wednesday.

That matters enormously for a woman who has spent five months redirecting a group, because the thing she has been avoiding is not a chapter. It is a confrontation she believes is waiting in it.

And there is no confrontation in that psalm. There is a man saying: there is nowhere you are not, and I find that astonishing.

You have been steering around a confrontation that is not in the text at all. It is written as wonder and the surrounding verses will not let it be read any other way, and His Spirit is the one carrying a written tone into a life, which is why it holds in a room where nothing has been said.

If I make my bed there

There is one line further down that I want to put in your hands, and I want to be careful with it because it is stronger than people realize.

He says: if I make my bed in the depths, behold, thou art there.

Make my bed. Not fall into. Not be dragged. Make a bed is what a person does when they are settling in somewhere on purpose, with some intention of staying, and he uses that phrase about the lowest place he can name.

And the answer is: thou art there. No caveat. No note about how He would rather not be. No suggestion that His presence there depends on the occupant getting up.

The psalm is willing to imagine somebody deliberately settled in the worst place they can think of, and it says He is in that room too, on the same terms as everywhere else.

You have a presence that extends to a room somebody deliberately settled into, on exactly the same terms. Scripture names the making of a bed rather than a falling, and the same Spirit at work in that psalm is the one testifying inside a person now.

Something belongs here in the middle where nobody can skip it. If the steering has become exhausting, if the nights have been getting long, or if the thinking has traveled out past regret toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Talk to your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. And you do not have to say one word about what is behind the door to do that: a good one will never require it, and a person can be well helped for years without ever opening it. If tonight is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be with you in it. None of that is a failure of faith. God has always worked through people.

Not yet is an answer

Now I want to say something plainly, because a great deal of teaching in this area implies the opposite and does harm by it.

You may not be able to reach that chapter. Not in five weeks and possibly not for years. That is not you refusing God.

I want that to stand by itself. A shut door is very often not an unwilling heart. It is very often a person who is not yet in a place where opening a thing would be survivable, and God does not force doors and never has, in any account we have of Him anywhere.

And there is no window here. The invitation does not expire in the fall. Nobody misses their moment. A person can steer for another decade and the same welcome is standing at the end of it, unchanged, with no note about the delay.

You are not refusing anybody, and the welcome has no expiry written anywhere on it. Psalm 139:7 describes a presence that is simply everywhere rather than a summons anybody can be late for, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.

And I am not going to tell you that you read it aloud in five weeks, or that something changes if you do. That is not mine to promise you.

You are clean right now with the route exactly as you have arranged it, and the arranging has never once been a witness about you. It is written and it is settled, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a settled thing real in a body.

The breakthrough

Here is where it turns, and it turns on the key the question is in.

The dread is of a confrontation waiting in a particular place. There is no confrontation in that psalm. There is a man astonished that there is nowhere he can go where he is not accompanied, and the astonishment is the whole mood of it.

You are accompanied everywhere, at this moment, including in the room you have been routing around. Psalm 139:7 asks its question in wonder and finds Him in every place it can imagine, and it is His Spirit and not the volume of your agreement who makes that word real in a woman planning a Wednesday.

And the second, which is the one that lets a person read or not read, freely.

You have nothing to expose and only something to permit, and permitting is a far smaller door than the one you have been steering around. The written psalm establishes the presence everywhere before it ever mentions searching, and the Spirit who applies it is not waiting on a chapter, so the route can stay exactly as it is without keeping anybody out.

Declare this over yourself

Say this because of where you stand, not because of what you have or have not read. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is what gives a person the right to speak over their own life. Scripture is the ground under all three lines and the Holy Spirit carries them out, so a shaking voice carries them as well as a steady one. And what God does about the door is His to decide, said under not my will, but Thine.

  1. Passage I never reach, you are ink on a page and you are not a trap. Psalm 139:7 asks its question in wonder and not in dread, and there is no confrontation anywhere in it. In the name of Jesus you stop standing between us, and I will reach you when I reach you.
  2. Dread of what is waiting in that room, you have no right to sit in this circle. His word says if I make my bed in the depths, behold, thou art there, with no caveat attached at all, and the Holy Spirit is the one testifying to that in me tonight.
  3. Lord, there is nowhere I could go from Your Spirit, and Psalm 139:7 says so as the most delighted line in the psalm. I am taking You at Your word in this hall, and I am saying You may stay in that room.
