The Shed at the End of the Property

It is past the second gate, down where the ground falls away toward the creek, and it was there when he bought the place thirty seven years ago.

Boards, a tin roof gone rust colored, a door with a hasp and an old padlock on it that he put there himself.

Dale mows down that way every couple of weeks in the summer and he mows around it. Not because he has to. There is nothing growing against it and the ground is even. He takes the mower in a wide arc that adds about forty seconds and comes back up.

He is seventy one now. The shed has been shut since one summer twenty two years ago.

He is not being mysterious about it and if you asked him what was in there he would tell you, quite calmly, that it is nothing you would want, and he would be right, and he would also be answering a different question than the one you asked.

He goes to church and has all his life and it is not decorative. He prays in his truck. He has sat with men in that church through some of the worst weeks of their lives and been genuinely useful.

And he has never mentioned that shed to God. Not once, in twenty one years, and he could not tell you why, and it is the only thing in his whole life he has kept out of that conversation.

If there is a shed somewhere in your life, this is written for you. And I want to say the first thing plainly before we go on: nothing in this article will ask you to describe what is in there, to anybody, ever. Not to a person, not to a group, not to me. This is between you and God and it stays that way.

The only person who named Him

There is a woman in Genesis nobody was looking for.

She had no standing. She was not the one the promise had been made to and she was not the one anybody in that household was concerned about. She was out in a wilderness beside a spring, having gone there on her own because there was nowhere else, and she was the last person in that story anybody would have expected God to go after.

He goes after her. He finds her at the spring and He talks to her, and what she says afterward is one of the most remarkable sentences in the whole book.

Thou God seest me.

And then the text says something that most readers walk straight past: she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her.

She names Him. She is the only person in the entire Bible who does that. Everybody else in Scripture receives a name from God or is told one. This woman, out in a wilderness with no standing at all, gives Him one, and the name she gives Him is about being seen.

You are dealing with a God who went out to a wilderness for one person nobody was looking for. Genesis 16:13 records a woman naming Him out of being found, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written finding and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands out by a shed.

Now, I want to point at what her sentence is not.

Thou God seest me is not a complaint about surveillance. She is not saying: there is no getting away from You. Everything about the scene says relief. She has been out there being nobody, and somebody came, and the thing that undoes her is not that she was caught, it is that she was looked for.

You have been sought out rather than found out, and those two are not the same experience at all. Scripture puts the naming in the mouth of somebody who was relieved rather than exposed, and His Spirit is the one carrying a written finding into a life, which is why it holds standing in a field with a padlock forty feet away.

Twenty one years is not a refusal

Now I want to say a thing plainly, because I think a lot of good men are carrying the wrong idea about this and nobody has bothered to correct it.

Not telling God about something for twenty one years is not a refusal of God.

I know how it looks from the inside. It looks like a deliberate withholding, sustained over decades, by a man who prays about everything else, and a man of conscience is going to draw a hard conclusion from that.

Here is what it usually is instead. It is a door that a person has never been in a position to open, and the not opening has continued not because the will hardened but because the position never changed. That is a completely different thing and it does not carry the weight the first version carries.

And God has not been standing at that door for twenty one years growing impatient. Nothing anywhere in Scripture describes Him that way. He went out to a wilderness after a woman who had not asked for Him.

You have not been refusing anybody, and nothing about the length of it changes what is standing there. Genesis 16:13 has God arriving where nobody sent Him and finding somebody who was not looking, and the same Spirit at work in that scene is the one testifying inside a person now.

Something belongs here in the middle where nobody can skip it. If the shed has gotten heavier as the years have gone, if the nights have been getting long, or if the thinking has traveled out past regret and toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Ring your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. And you do not have to say a word about what is in there to do that: a good one will never ask, and a man can be well helped for years without ever mentioning it. If tonight is a dark one, call or text 988 or a crisis line and let another human being be in it with you. That is not a soft spot in anybody's faith. God has always worked through people.

The one thing kept out of the conversation

There is something particular about a man who prays about everything except one item, and I want to name it kindly.

It is not that he thinks God cannot handle it. Ask him and he will tell you there is nothing God cannot handle, and he means it, and he has told other men so in that church and been right.

It is that a conversation which has never included a thing develops a shape. After twenty one years, the conversation itself has a contour, and the contour goes around, the way a mower goes around, and neither the man nor the mower is making a decision anymore. The arc is just how it goes now.

Which means the thing keeping that shed out of the conversation is not defiance. It is a route worn into the grass over two decades.

You are following an arc worn in rather than making a refusal, and no amount of years turns one into the other. Scripture shows God going to a wilderness rather than waiting at a door, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.

And I am not going to tell you the padlock comes off this summer. It may never come off, and that is not a failure and it is not the point. Nothing here depends on that hasp.

You are clean right now with the shed exactly as shut as it is, and the shed has never once been a witness about you. It is written and it is settled, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a settled thing real in a body.
