The Password He Never Wrote Down

Everything else is in the manager. Thirty one entries, backed up, and his wife has the master because they agreed on that years ago and it was sensible and he meant it.

There is one that is not in there.

Adam is forty four. He made that account in a particular month and he chose the password in his head, and he has never typed it anywhere except into the one box it goes in, and he has never written it down on paper or in a file or anywhere at all.

That was the whole point. If it is nowhere, nobody finds it, including by accident, including in the way people find things after somebody dies, which is a thought he has had and put away more than once.

He is a Christian and he has been for twenty years and it is not a decoration. He leads a group on Tuesdays. He would tell you, and mean it, that God has every part of his life.

Except one login, held only in his head.

If you have something you have kept out of every system on purpose, this is written for you. And before anything: nothing here will ask you to describe it. Not to a person, not to your wife, not to a group, not to me. This is between you and God and it stays there.

What light means in that letter

Here is the sentence.

This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

Now, almost everybody reads light there as exposure. A beam. Something that finds what is hidden and shows it, and a person with one account nobody knows about hears that verse as a threat with a friendly voice.

Read what John does with the word in the next two verses and that reading falls apart.

He goes straight on to say that if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another. Fellowship. Company. Being together in the same place.

Light in that letter is not an instrument of inspection. It is the medium in which company happens. It is where people can see each other, be with each other, be in the same room in a way that darkness makes impossible. The point of the light is not that things get found. The point is that people can be together in it.

You are being invited into a medium of company rather than put under a beam. 1 John 1:5 defines light and then immediately uses it for fellowship, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written definition and makes it real in a person, so this does not rest on how much of it lands at a kitchen table.

And that reframes what a shut thing is doing. It is not that a man is successfully hiding something from a searchlight. That was never on the table anyway and he knows it. It is that there is a room he is in alone, and being alone in a room is the actual cost, and it has been the cost for years.

You have been paying in company rather than getting away with something. It is written as fellowship in the very next breath, and His Spirit is the one carrying a written company into a life, which is why it holds in a kitchen with a laptop shut.

In him is no darkness at all

There is a second half to the sentence and I do not want to skip it, because it does something specific.

In him is no darkness at all.

That is not a boast about His purity, although it is true of His purity. In the context of what John is arguing, it is a statement about capacity. There is no part of God that is dark, which means there is no corner of Him where a thing could be lost, and equally no shadow in Him from which somebody could be watching without being seen.

He is entirely light throughout, and a being who is entirely light has nothing hidden in Himself.

Which means the exchange is not one sided, and that is the part that undid me the first time somebody pointed it out. A person opening a room to God is not opening a door to somebody standing in the dark. They are opening a door to somebody who has no dark in Him at all and is already fully visible.

You are dealing with somebody who has nothing hidden on His own side of it. Scripture says no darkness at all, which is a statement about His whole being, and the same Spirit at work in that letter is the one testifying inside a person now.

Something belongs here in the middle where nobody can skip it. If the one account has gotten heavier over the years, if the nights have been getting long, or if the thinking has traveled out past regret and toward wishing to be gone, get a person alongside you. Call your doctor. Sit down with a counselor. And you do not have to say one word about it to do that: a good one will never require it, and a man can be well helped for years without ever mentioning it. If tonight is a dark one, call or text 988 or your local crisis line and let another human being be with you in it. None of that is a failure of faith. God has always worked through people.

Company is the whole of the offer

Now I want to be exact about what is being offered here, because it is smaller and better than what most people brace for.

The offer is not a clean up. It is not: bring it out and I will deal with it and then we can be all right again. There is no transaction in these verses at all.

The offer is company. That a man would not be alone in that room.

And company is a much smaller ask than disclosure. Disclosure means handing over information and then living with what happens next. Company means somebody else being present, and the only thing it requires from a person is permission.

That is why I keep saying this is between you and God. Not because secrecy is a virtue, but because what is actually on offer here does not require a second human being to be involved at all, and a great many articles on this subject quietly slide toward telling somebody, and I am not going to do that to you.

You are being offered company, and company asks for permission rather than for an account. 1 John 1:5 leads straight into fellowship rather than into any transaction, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living in a body.

And I am not going to tell you the account gets closed or written down or mentioned. It may never be. That is not the point of any of this and nothing here depends on it.

You are clean right now with it held exactly where it is held, and where it is held has never once been a witness about you. It is written and it is settled, and it is His Spirit rather than the strength of your agreement who makes a settled thing real in a body.
